Check unusual requests using a different trusted channel. A familiar name, face, voice, username, or caller ID is not proof by itself. For family emergencies, use a private family verification phrase as an extra check, then contact the family member using a number or account you already know.
Bring a trusted adult in early. Make it clear that reporting a suspicious message, accidental click, or uncomfortable interaction will not get the child in trouble.
PRACTICAL PROTECTION
Start with the controls that prevent common account, device, privacy, and social-engineering problems. These are deliberately practical: each one can be reviewed without specialized security tools.

Look at direct messages, friend requests, group invites, voice chat, tagging, and location sharing across social, gaming, and messaging platforms. Pay special attention to conversations moving into private or disappearing-message channels.
Passwords, verification codes, gift cards, money, private photos, and personal information should never be sent simply because a message creates pressure. Teach children to stop when a request feels urgent or secretive.
AI can create convincing messages, images, audio, and video. A familiar face or voice is not enough to prove a request is real. Agree on a private family verification phrase for unusual or emergency requests, then independently contact the family member through a number or account you already know.
Children should know they can report an accidental click, strange message, hacked account, or uncomfortable interaction without automatically losing device access or getting punished. Early reporting gives adults more options.
START WITH WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE
Parents do not need to buy another security product to get started. iPhone and Android devices already include tools that can create strong passwords, store passkeys, flag unsafe credentials, manage app permissions, apply updates, and set parental controls.
Apple Passwords is a locked digital notebook for account sign-ins. It can create and remember different passwords, store passkeys, fill credentials in for you, and warn about weak, reused, or compromised passwords.
Try it now: Open Passwords → unlock with Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode → tap Security → review weak, reused, or compromised accounts. Start with email, the Apple Account, school accounts, major gaming accounts, and social accounts.
For kids: “You do not have to memorize every password. Your phone keeps them in its locked password box.”
Google Password Manager does the same basic job. It creates and remembers strong passwords, stores passkeys, fills sign-ins, and can check for unsafe credentials.
Try it now: Open Chrome → tap the three-dot menu → Settings → Google Password Manager → Checkup. Review compromised, reused, or weak passwords and change the most important accounts first.
A passkey is a digital key your phone keeps for you. A password is something you know and can accidentally give away. A passkey is stored by your trusted device or password manager, and you usually approve sign-in the same way you unlock the phone, such as with your face, fingerprint, or device PIN.
For kids: “A password is something you can accidentally tell somebody. A passkey is a key your phone keeps for you.”
When an app or website you trust offers Create a passkey or Save a passkey, follow the prompt. If the service does not support passkeys, use its strongest available multi-factor authentication.
Think of multi-factor authentication as two locks on an account. The password is the first lock. The second lock might be your phone, a sign-in prompt, or a temporary code.
Teach this rule: “If somebody asks for the security code that just appeared on your phone, do not give it to them. That code is the second key to your account.”
For kids: “Updates fix broken digital locks.”
iPhone: Settings → General → Software Update → Automatic Updates → turn on automatic installation.
Android: Open Settings and search for Software update or System update. You can also check the Android security update and Google Play system update under the device’s Android version information. Menu names can vary by manufacturer.
iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security. Review Location Services, Camera, Microphone, Photos, and Contacts.
Android: Settings → Apps → select the app → Permissions, or Settings → Security & privacy → Privacy → Permission manager.
Ask one question for every permission: “Does this app actually need this information to do what we use it for?” If not, remove the permission.
iPhone: Settings → Screen Time → under Family, select the child. Review App Limits, Downtime, Communication Limits, Content & Privacy Restrictions, and Communication Safety.
Android: Open Family Link → select the child. Review Screen time → Time limits, App limits, and Controls → Google Chrome and Web.
Think of parental controls as guardrails while a child learns how to drive on the internet. They help, but they do not replace conversation and judgment.

The phrase is only one layer. It does not replace independently calling the family member or checking with another trusted person.
